News for October 2026
The meeting began with a well illustrated and detailed account of bee boles and straw bee skeps, or hives. Bee boles are places in a wall for the skeps which are like upside down baskets and vary in height from twelve inches (30 centimeters) to fifteen inches (52 centimeters). Fascinating illustrations of them will be in a forthcoming Penwith Paper. Wooden beehives were not invented until 1852/3. Honey and bees wax were very valuable and important commodities in the past. Honey was tithed. Bees wax was used for many things including candles in church and for the gentry.
This was followed by other members talking about their on-going research. What to keep in the group’s extensive archive will be discussed at future meetings. The next Penwith Paper is an intriguing account of the discovery of the lost marker stone for the old Penzance market cross.
Members will be selling Beyond the Bookshelves and other books at The Morrab Library’s Christmas Fair on Saturday, November 21st from 10am to 2pm.
